Lee and his Rebel army traveled north through the Carrollton Manor area of southern Frederick County en route to occupying Frederick City in the Fall of 1862. Union soldiers later utilized the north county turnpike to reach Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, for the historic battle. The road served as a vital transportation artery for the movement of troops and the transport of wounded soldiers.
In recognition of its historical and scenic significance, the State Highway Association designated the Frederick County portion of US-15 as the “Catoctin Mountain Highway” in 1974.
